Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS) Committee

National PTA announced in December 2009 a three year campaign to mobilize parents to advance the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) along with other key education reforms. National PTA will build on PTA’s rich history advocating for education, health and child welfare reforms while complementing PTA’s current Public Policy Agenda.

The 15^th District PTA applied for a grant with National PTA and is now part of the third wave of the Common Core State Standards Campaign in October 2011. Over the fall of 2011, 15^th District PTA formed a KCAS committee to meaningfully participate in the campaign to implement the newly adopted Common Core State Standards. Central to that mission is to educate parents on the Common Core Standards and to mobilize them to support the efforts of the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and Kentucky State School Board to fully implement the new standards by 2011-2012.

Members of the 15^th District KCAS committee flew to Florida and received training on the CCSSI and grassroots advocacy. Those members with the help of National PTA trainers then provided the same training to members of the 15^th District PTA. There is now a cadre of trainers available to provide trainings and workshops on the Common Core State Standards to any interested PTA unit or community group. A schedule of workshops is available. The KCAS committee's goal is to educate and train PTA leaders, members, and parents about the Common Core State Standards.

Kentucky PTA will work on this initiative throughout the coming year and will be reaching out to all of its members as we work on this exciting initiative.
